10 Things You’ll Learn Teaching English in Asia

Teaching English abroad is strange and fun. Here’s why.

    The students and school kids will stop and follow you around town because you don’t look like them and they’re curious. You’ll feel like your'e living in the ‘the Prince and the Pauper’. Walk swiftly away and they’ll eventually disperse.

    You’ll have to control a room of forty energetic preschool students, throwing pencils at each other and jabbering in a different language. Just accept it and keep teaching.

    You’ll be developing curriculum from textbooks from the mid fifties. But your co-workers won’t care about your struggle because they don’t make as much as you. Then you realize every lesson you create is considered amazing by non-native speakers.

    Knowledge of the most Basic English phrases will make you the ‘Chief of the English language’ to the non-native speakers and everyone will mill around you like you are Sitting Bull.

    You’ll drink powdered coffee in the morning, which looks disgusting. But will taste like heaven.

    Office gossip is the same in Asia, why did you think it was going to be different? Just drink your coffee and go to work.

    1. The local food sellers near the school will love you for your business. After your purchase, they’ll talk about you in another language as you walk away. But you won’t care because you won’t understand them.

    You’ll be treated as a commodity for your native speaking skills, even if you were a nobody back home. You’ll be treated like a god, and you’ll see yourself as one. Then you meet another teacher and realize that you’re not special.

    You’ll run into other students and teachers at the convenience store. Instead of feeling awkward and embarrassed like you might in the states, you’ll see at as a cultural experience, while they’ll view you as an oddity. But it’s all good fun.

    Finally, You’ll never forget the experience and people you meet while teaching abroad. But don’t try to understand it, just enjoy the ride.
