I will finally take advice from my administration. I let the small undeveloped children take control of their lesson. They got to choose their rubric, their project, and their timeline. Meanwhile, I get to spend time on BoredTeachers.com, wondering where my life went so wrong that I became a teacher. The funny thing is, the rubric is much more difficult than I would have come up with. Jokes on them!

I have a student who started at a DRA 4 in September
She was iterally was unable to read the level 6. Were going into Winter Break in two weeks and she’s at a level 20. I almost cried when she read and understood the passage. In class today she made an interesting observation when we read a version of the three little pigs wherein the wolf eats 2 pigs and the last pig ate the wolf. “If the wolf ate the first two pigs, didn’t the last pig actually eat the two pigs too?” Never thought I would have heard a question like that from her. So proud!

I was looking at posts and went back and read the article on teacher abuse. Last week a student left the cafeteria without permission, I followed to see what was wrong. The result was him ignoring me at first then, once we were both back in the cafeteria, he began berating me. I was called a “fat b*tch” and threatened. After that, the mother also yelled at me for lying on her son, keep in mind he was on camera and in a room will 20 other students, 4 teacher, and a few child nutrition workers. The next day I showed up with a smile on my face even though I felt embarrassed.

What do we do when we feel like the students are “bullying” us? I’ve been teaching for 15 years, it shouldn’t be like this.

I was a teacher in a district that made me lose my faith in teaching. Everything I did was wrong; classroom management, not going for help before I had a problem, not knowing things before I was supposed to know them, etc. My mentor did help me and I went for help everyday.
When moving to a new district I learned that those things do not happen and I love my job. I found my new calling.

I was hearing voices coming from my pocket and pulled out my phone, only to realize that I somehow “pocket-dialed” a Facetime session with my best friend, Ryan. My reaction was me smiling and saying “What the fuck?!?!” and looking up seconds later realizing my 2nd grade students were sitting right in front of me… “5 Dojo points to anyone that didn’t just hear that!”

I think that people have turned a the very real issue of bullying into a joke. My students use the word “bullying” to describe EVERYTHING! I was watching a TV show and one of the people started talking about how much they were bullied in school, almost like it he deserved a medal for it, I rolled my eyes and turned the show off. We have muddied the waters so much that actual real issues get swept away while we deal with baseless nonsense.

A school psychologist told me that our job was to basically keep one of my students “alive” until he graduates. He’s been suicidal for years, I guess I always knew this was my job as an ES teacher , but hearing it out loud has been so heavy on my heart.

PSA: Don’t beat yourself up for not knowing things you hadn’t learned yet. You can do everything right and stuff can still go wrong. Life doesn’t require that we be the best, only that we try.
