I recently found out my former school’s admin are looking for a new SPED teacher after two SPED staff got promotions. What’s crazy is in the previous year there were 5 SPED staff and at the end of the year two SPED teachers (me being one of the two) got laid off. At the beginning of the next school year the SPED chair got promoted to being an AP and the SPED English teacher got promoted to being SPED chair. Point? I strongly sense admin got rid of me and the other SPED teacher JUST SO those two other SPED staff could get promoted. I also sense they got rid of me because I was too “impactful” and caring in interacting with the students (which by the way my administrator REALLY LIKED and gave me high marks on my eval for) but also because I wasn’t doing things thee way admin wanted things done. As for the other SPED teacher, she got laid off simply because she sucked and didn’t know how to teach. Regardless, it’s sad how politics got in the way of maintaining a healthy and productive community and school environment.

I have a student with significant specials needs and who is mostly nonverbal that joins my class several times a day, for recesses, lunch, specials, and science. He does not come with any para support. Last week when he joined us for recess, he thought that it would be fun to shut the door with him on the outside and holding the door shut. No one could leave the room until I called the office and they cajoled him into letting us out. After talking to my principal about the safety issues, I was told that I would just “have to figure him out” as there was no money for another para.

Today I was at the mall and a group of children were running around. I almost said in my teacher voice to use walking feet

It was my first year at this school. I had worked 25 years at my previous school before they closed it due to insufficient enrollment. This new school is in a very poor and violent neighborhood. There was a triple homicide across the street from the school. Because I stayed late to get plans ready because I was going to jury duty the next day. I couldn’t leave school until 8:45 PM because it was a crime scene! Anyway, the day before Christmas break one of my students came up to me and told me that he had something for me. He put 46 cents in my hand. I knew he didn’t have alot of money and I told him to keep it and buy something for himself. He refused and said that he wasn’t able to buy something but that no one had brought me any presents so he wanted me to have something. I hugged him and it took everything for me not to cry.

I’m a special ed assistant and my main responsibility is scribing for students who need dictation to a scribe. I like my job but the worst part about it is when I’m scribing for them on a test and they are missing every. single. question. And I cannot help them. It takes all of my willpower to keep my mouth shut 😂

Schools are lacking in having enough staff in schools, driving teachers away and lacking to meet the needs of the kids. Zero Tolerance for Bullying is a joke because daily kids are getting away with verbal bullying. It’s Zero Tolerance for Fighting because that is when something gets done and that’s not enough or soon enough. The kids need help, so stop going after the teachers to push the blame on them for their behavior problems. Step up and get more resources for the mental help they need. I work in a Title I school. Many of our kids are living in trauma or have been in trauma. I always wanted to have my own kids, but with this job, I just don’t see how I would be able to do both of those roles well. This job takes every ounce of me, all my time, all my emotions, all my energy and my thoughts. The assistant principal is my evaluator and she has never complimented me anything, but only tells me what I need to do better. You were a teacher at one point, you know that people need the sandwich when giving feedback! I am there for the kids and that’s what keeps me going.

I got in trouble because a boy cried that he had to finish the mile run. He walked the entire time and felt a mile was to much to walk. Every other student ran the mile not walked, so i was told that i have to aplogize to the kid

Yesterday was one of those days I had to ask the Lord for strength not to bop someone! I found myself having to explain myself to a parent yesterday after her son refused to come into my lesson, disrupted 30 other children’s learning and screamed ‘NO’ in my face so I raised voice (to tell him to get in) and took away his lunch time.. I had to explain myself. There’s something a little bit wrong there.

Went to check on a student who had been in the bathroom a long time and found him masturbating. I told him that we don’t do that here at school. The next time he went to the bathroom, I told him no playing around. He told me “I will do it really fast, don’t worry.” My principal was cracking up in her office as I explain to this young man that we don’t do it fast or slow here at school.

This is my 4th year. I’m already done. The amount of meaningless paperwork is overwhelming. I have class dojo, but need a parent contact log. For what?! I never feel like I’m on top of things. I’m constantly catching up and losing time away from my husband. Teachers should not have to do any work after school. That’s an absurd thing to think. Oh, but my ESOL teacher can send me an email saying she’s not coming to my class due to an abundance of paperwork?! GIRL. We all have paperwork. I can’t send an email to my principal saying I’m not teaching today due to an abundance of paperwork. I hate teaching. It’s not anything like it should be.
