Just because a person has an administration certificate doesn’t make them a master teacher.

While driving a school bus a sweet child brings up his pet turtle for me to baby sit until his owner gets home. With no where to place the sweet baby turtle except for the bus driver window that was open and as we made the first curve the wind forced the turtle box out of the window. Child owner called me TURTLE KILLER!! repeatedly until I could get him home, 15miles. Long day. But child graduated with a specific memory.

Being a teacher is exhausting -but one of my senior students just baked me a cookie with my name engraved in icing…and just like *that*, I’m reminded of what makes this job worth it!

I have spent 12 hours of my weekend in my classroom grading, organizing, planning, filling out paperwork admin demands, etc. I arrive at school an hour early and stay an hour after everyday minimum to try and make progress. I’m expected to attend a training for the next two days five hours away–but I’ve been tasked to cover a class during my conference since admin can’t find a sub. I consume packets of caffeine in bottles of water throughout the day, take anti-stress supplements, and am on meds for depression. I guess what I’m saying is I’d prefer to burst into tears right now, but I have ten minutes before next class comes.

When your colleague tells you to be off your phone and be a model to students to not have their phone out. GTFO. I am an adult not a student.

One of my team members is leaving mid year to attend to her health. I commend her for her decision but I’m also incredibly stressed out thinking about who her successor might be. Our school is historically bad at finding teachers and I worry that her decision will ultimately be a huge burden on our team. On the flip side, I wish I could do what she is. It’s eye opening to have teachers from other states tell you how it is back home. No unions in NC sucks!

The moral in my school is starting to go down. It’s only the end of September and the staff is really stressed out. Our school is known to be very active and has a lot of high maintenance logistics that don’t always play out the way they should. Our admin isn’t the best either, so that makes things a hundred times worse. Hopefully we can make it to June .

Being and Instructional Assistant at a secondary level school in a large school district is not easy. There is so much to do and so much is put on you to support seven different teachers and hundreds of students. Sometimes, if not most, you are charged with giving instruction and leading a class. Basically, you are hired as an unlicensed teacher to be another adult in the room to prevent “casualties” and “support” students. Really, you are nothing more than the “extra reminder” to students to follow instructions because they didn’t listen the first time 🙄But hey, at least I get a decent salary and good benefits. Kids first though 💯

A lot of teachers that I work with don’t know how to teach and interact with kids. Don’t get me wrong, I myself am not the best educator and sometimes struggle to handle my students, but there has to be a balance between being firm and being loving, and that is something many teachers in my building don’t have 😔

I’m in my 3rd year of subbing and thinking about changing careers but don’t know what else I would do. I do enjoy teaching, but I’m music certified and don’t want to do that anymore. I have no control over my kids, and it’s my fault. The co-teacher I’m currently assigned to deserves so much better than me, but she does say she’s grateful for my help (probably just to be kind). I’m so lost and upset and my anxiety is turning into depression and consuming me.
