In the wacky, wonderful world of education, there are many ups and downs. There are “ah” days when you know you’ve made a connection and “oh crap” days like when you utter something inappropriate in a foreign language before you remember that the exchange student in your room understands that language perfectly well. This was an “ah” day.

My favorite musical is Fiddler on the Roof. I’ve been in it twice, once as Perchik the student and once as Lazar Wolf the butcher, and directed it once with my son as Tevye. The literature book I used with my ninth graders had the play in it. We would read it in class and I would show scenes from the movie as we went along. Shortly after we finished it one year, our school had an assembly. The performer that day was a violinist. Eva, a recent transfer into our school was in my class when we read the play. When the performer was warming up, he played the fiddler theme music from the play. Eva turned to look at me with a big smile on her face, nodded her head and gave me a big thumbs up. Ah!

I had a student rip up the coloring sheets of four students, two were very upset because they wanted to give the picture to a parent. When she was at recess I ripped up her paper and hid it in my lunch box. When she came in looking for I told her I didn’t know where it went.

Thank god for my administrative team. Class was going nuts and I finally reached the point I called for help. They showed up fast and gave me such a helping hand I wanted to cry tears of joy. Sometimes you just need that support…

After 20 years of service I was given the opportunity to lead. A new principal came in and after 6 months terminated my leadership and gave it to her former intern student. Now I can’t stand to look at either of them. I feel completely devalued and am on meds for depression for the first time in my life.
She has sucked the joy out of teaching and helping others for me.

Today one of my students kicked me, grunted at me and threw a cushion right at my face.
So don’t tell me I don’t need a glass of wine on a Monday night.

I sure do.

One of the Kindergarteners in my class has an affinity for rhyming. Today during math he was rhyming words with classmates names. Normally I wouldn’t mind as he was at a math station and was getting his work completed. Then I hear him rhyme “Peyton and Satan” and after the third time we had to make a rule that we don’t rhyme during math time anymore.

Our school was evaluated today. For the past year and a half, all teachers have been working like mad men to change the school for the better. After all that hard work, we heard, “there’s a lack of learning in your school.” How is it the teachers fault when we spend all day teaching and raising these kids with no parental support, no budget, and a non-supportive community.

It’s been rumored that my tyrant of a VP is leaving, but she wants to go out with a bang. That’s why she’s targeting me, a second year teacher at this joke of a district. All the English teachers know that I’m the sacrificial lamb this year, and they’ve been hugging me and offering me advice, even if I don’t ask for it. 🤔 My SGO was rejected 4 times by this gem of a VP, even though I was told to copy and paste the SGO from my mentor. She even failed me during my observation: 2.50. I’m desperately looking for other opportunities because I hate this school with a bleeding passion, but I’m only staying because I need the money. I’m praying that another door will open because I don’t think I’ve ever been this miserable.

I’m on sick leave for depression. I knew teaching wasn’t paid well, but I didn’t realise how much of a toll it would take on me.

I have changed schools to reduce my stress and it worked.
If you are miserable…change schools, districts, positions, grade levels. The grass is greener. Do not give your life away to a miserable situation. Teachers have options!!
