I cried through every Hangout with my kids–I’ll miss them. However, today was our last virtual meeting for the staff, and everyone was crying about how much they were going to miss each other. I was on mute and my video was off because I was literally pouring champagne and celebrating making it through this year! Peace, Mean Girls!

I’m anxious.

Because tomorrow is Friday.

I won’t be high-fiving my favorite kids tomorrow.

Beaming with pride as they serve our school in their safety and service positions.

Being in my inspiring building with my colleagues, sharing coffee together, and swapping ideas & laughs as we prepare for the weeks ahead.

Planning engaging lessons with responsive instruction & small groups…. by the minute.

Hearing your funny quips.

Consoling & strategizing with you when your friend wouldn’t sit next to you on the bus.

Feeling the magic and connections in the room during read aloud.

Playing lightning with you at recess…

Usually… I’m excited for Friday’s….

But not tomorrow.

I’ll have to settle with chatting & learning with you with you through a computer screen…..
Zoom, email, SeeSaw….
Don’t get me wrong… you’ve been resilient and brilliant through that screen…. and so have I.

But there’s something about our Fridays that I miss.

Missing my kids so very much. Afraid of starting next year under the umbrella of remote learning.

I had a horrible year this year in one of my advanced classes. I had 5 worst-behaved students ever in one of them… They were super loud and obnoxious and tried to do tic toc videos in the middle of class. I called home and no help. They would break my personal belongings and blame it on each other so you know honesty was out of the window. I got called racist for asking them to behave properly and their parents were super embarrassed by them but did nothing. Anyways I am so glad we got moved to online learning… I do not miss being treated horribly by a minor and I am so glad I get to fail them for not doing anything even online. And I am so glad I don’t get to see any of my coworkers.

So we have been doing online learning since March. I have used Canvas in all my classes with assignments set up with step by step instructions.

Last week I had a number of students that finally decided to do some work email me and ask how do I log on to Canvas? I wanted to reach through the computer and strangle them.

The frustration is real at times.

Teacher appreciation week! Hooray! My husband and I went to pick up my ‘prize’ for working so hard…my principal gave a halfhearted wave at me and avoided eye contact on purpose. I was so heartbroken at being so humiliated on this day of appreciation I cried on the way home and couldn’t eat the food. Two years into teaching, with no experience, and certainly no help, and I still have yet to hear one word of praise. It’s always the focus on what I’m doing wrong….when I see veteran teachers messing up all the time over the simplest tasks! Somehow I have a target on my back, and although I strive to play by all the rules, do my best, and encourage the students, all I get is negativity. I am not sure how much longer I can do this with this extra weight on my back.

Due to Covid-19, the school closures, and the clear lack of student engagement in the last couple of months, I’m starting to lose my sense of purpose as a teacher. I really want this to work out but I’m finding it difficult to care when no one else seems to be motivated to learn 🙁

Ok- my friend peed in her classroom in the trash barrel when her kids went to specials because she could not get a break in time to make it to the bathroom. She is considering quitting because she feels so humiliated. I told her she wasn’t alone, and confessed that I too had had an accident at school. Can I get some supportive “hilarious” likes so she doesn’t feel alone and won’t quit? She is amazing!!! Thanks!!

From a student: An Exit ticket – I used to think …. but now I know

“I used to think Ms. * was crazy, but now I know it is our fault. ” Truer words nevere spoken-at least since 2016.
