I swear, parents are getting worse and worse! Right now I am dealing with a parent who seriously hates me. She says I don’t care about her child because she doesn’t sit next to me. #1 – I am never actually sitting at my desk. #2 – She has straight A’s! I am convinced that nothing I do will please this parent except for maybe get hit by a train….

Feeling so anxious that I’m sick and shaking. I hate this job. Any behavior issue referred to admin is thrown back, and we’re asked to call parents. That gets nowhere.

I’m not sure what to do. I’ve only been teaching for four years now, but I want to leave the profession. I’m actually thinking of doing something else that involves literature. Maybe I’m at the wrong school? But I felt this way even at my old school. Life was so different before I became a teacher. I wasn’t so stressed, and I didn’t feel so guilty if I didn’t take work home. I just want to work with books, but I don’t want to teach anymore. I feel so hopeless.

I’m a first year teacher, and I teach all Freshmen ELA/Reading in a small neighborhood school with many high-risk students. I was hounded all through first quarter about students who had Fs in my classes by our Freshmen on Track coordinator, who made it clear that I was not supposed to fail any students lest our district ratings go down.
Lying and fudging grades isn’t improving outcomes! How can I hold my students accountable if I’m pretending they’ve completed work they’ve never even done? Nothing has made me more frustrated this year.

I took my class outside yesterday to do an interactive lesson. I had the kids sit down on some benches under a big shady tree. Apparently that was a big ask. There were three kids who decided to climb and jump all over the bench and then start flicking dirt at each other. I got grumpy and told them to move and sit next to the bin nearby. One kid, who is quite adept at constant low level annoyance just kept at me. I said something like “teachers shouldn’t say this but I actually really hate that I have this class.” This resulted in this kid saying that “yeah, well you’re the worst teacher I’ve ever had”. His words cut me. I’m glad that it was really sunny outside and I had my sunglasses on because I actually started to get teary. I actually said to the whole class that I was really upset by that… But I had to move on with the lesson. This kid ended up walking away and I didn’t care.

Even though I was promoted over a month ago to lead teacher I’m still not getting the pay (supposedly back pay will happen) and forced to handle the person I replaced with kid gloves (she was in lead role for over a year and NEVER met the minimum requirements) in a role that is literally less intense than babysitting (watching kids at nap, pre-planed music time, outside play, coloring, snack, and cleaning). It has me crawling the walls!

This is my 8th year teaching. I am fed up with supplying my classroom with supplies out of my own pocket only to be destroyed by the students. We also have no behavioral support and are not allowed to keep students in from recess. It is a low income school where education is not a priority to most families. The students do not get the help at home and we have no way to hold them accountable. The district is against holding students back, so they are being passed on to the next grade when they haven’t put in the work to earn it. On top of that, we are being told that we need to create a more positive atmosphere while we’re told we are doing everything wrong. I go home exhausted and discouraged every single day.

Morale is way down in my school because admin won’t apply the appropriate consequences to severely disruptive students, unless they are involved. A student attacked a coworker by chasing her down the hall, punching her repeatedly and kicked her in the vagina and the child got sent home for the afternoon. The next day the child kicked the VP and for suspended for several days. Double standard, much? In addition to this we have a few staff members on stress leave and more going… when I approached admin about helping to find a solution to everything falling apart, I heard “excuse me, I don’t think anything is falling apart around here!”… have you been living under a rock?! Sheesh!

First year teaching, so you know the drill, 5th grade is killing me one day at a time. Today, one of my hardest kids was having an almost normal day and thought “I should tell him he was doing good today!” During end of the day recess I say “Hey, by the way, you had a pretty good day today!” He responds by yelling “No! No! I hate good days! Shut up!” Well ok then.
