What do we do when we feel like the students are “bullying” us? I’ve been teaching for 15 years, it shouldn’t be like this.

I was a teacher in a district that made me lose my faith in teaching. Everything I did was wrong; classroom management, not going for help before I had a problem, not knowing things before I was supposed to know them, etc. My mentor did help me and I went for help everyday.
When moving to a new district I learned that those things do not happen and I love my job. I found my new calling.

I was hearing voices coming from my pocket and pulled out my phone, only to realize that I somehow “pocket-dialed” a Facetime session with my best friend, Ryan. My reaction was me smiling and saying “What the fuck?!?!” and looking up seconds later realizing my 2nd grade students were sitting right in front of me… “5 Dojo points to anyone that didn’t just hear that!”

I think that people have turned a the very real issue of bullying into a joke. My students use the word “bullying” to describe EVERYTHING! I was watching a TV show and one of the people started talking about how much they were bullied in school, almost like it he deserved a medal for it, I rolled my eyes and turned the show off. We have muddied the waters so much that actual real issues get swept away while we deal with baseless nonsense.

A school psychologist told me that our job was to basically keep one of my students “alive” until he graduates. He’s been suicidal for years, I guess I always knew this was my job as an ES teacher , but hearing it out loud has been so heavy on my heart.

PSA: Don’t beat yourself up for not knowing things you hadn’t learned yet. You can do everything right and stuff can still go wrong. Life doesn’t require that we be the best, only that we try.

I am so frustrated with the education system and the Union. I just don’t get how some teachers/Admins are allowed to stay in their jobs! They are so brutal – it isn’t even funny! They are rude to students and staff members, they are not team players at all and people don’t want to be around them – yet they still keep their jobs! Ugh!

I’m a special education para (aide) and I’m working on getting my teaching degree. I’ve been in a school for 5 years (including one year I even had to write lesson plans) and for all but three years, have had opportunities to be in chargr of the class on my own. I’m also 35, so I’m one of the para’s that looked down on because I should have already graduated college, but I’m too young to just be doing this in retirement. For the past two years (in two different school districts) I am being given no opportunities from my classroom teacher and at times being outright excluded or ignored. I ended up having to go to the restroom, cry, wash my face, and then apend two more weeks pretending like nothing happened when the classroom teacher marked me the lowest you can on everything on my evaluation. Now, I get I’m not perfect but I try my best, and she only gave me things to correct twice, the entire year, and I attempted to correct them. She also got on to me (and I do meam go on to, like she would one of the kids) for talking to loud. I’m haed if hearing and don’t know how loud I am, I try but a friendly signal and I’ll lower my voice. There’s also the fact that she can be way wwwaaaaayyyu louder then I am, and one of the times it was loud it was because I was having a panic attack. I have ptsd from childhood trauma and hate when people hold me after I’ve asked them.to let me go, especially males. One of our kids who was about 6 foot tall (I’m 5’2″) had me in a bear hug and would not let me go after repeated rewuest. He’s known to be violent when he’s mad, and again….ptsd. But I’m the one that needs to be quiet and thanks for the help….sorry my panic attack was so loud. I love my SpEd kids, but I can’t wait to go to GenEd and get my own room……if I even continue. I’m hoping I didn’t waste the last 5 years.

Special education teachers don’t enough credit or respect for they do. I recall working at an alternative high school where I was a SPED teacher dealing with a gazillion things at once while trying to keep students on my caseload safe and alive. Did I get any thanks? No. Did admin award me anything? No. Did my SPED chair award me anything or show appreciation. No. These are the reasons why teachers leave SPED to go elsewhere or go into GenEd. SPED is honestly a thankless job and people don’t view you as a true teacher. Sad 😔
