I’m on sick leave for depression. I knew teaching wasn’t paid well, but I didn’t realise how much of a toll it would take on me.

I have changed schools to reduce my stress and it worked.
If you are miserable…change schools, districts, positions, grade levels. The grass is greener. Do not give your life away to a miserable situation. Teachers have options!!

I had a 10 yr old student last year who knew how to “play” me, and got many, if not all, the boys in my class to derail my lessons with talking over me, interrupting, etc. I had built in rewards like “joke time” since he was such a class clown, and he could dance really well-trying to get his attention seeking behavior to be fed into in only positive ways. Thank heaven, I currently have a supportive principal because he took that student out of my class for a few days. I took video of my lessons and the boy was able to access the learning from a Chrome book. Well, I continued to make videos so that students could “plug in” and learn while I dealt with behavior issues. Sure enough, I took away the audience, and within a week or two, I got my classroom back under control. So, just when you think you’re at the end of yourself, take courage because these students NEED us. Keep trying. ~ Kind regards, from a 28 year veteran teacher, taught in 4 schools and 15 principals in that time, now on medication for anxiety in the past 6 years, but I feel like I am still making a difference. I hope my state doesn’t steal my pension tho! The legislature is making teaching QUITE RIDICULOUS! GRRrrrrrr. My hubby jokes that ppl won’t use the term “going postal” anymore. Instead, they’re gonna “go teacher on you” which is more scary to him because of all the extreme pressures on us all. Funny, but kinda sad too.

I had my first Parent meeting with admin a few weeks ago…it did NOT go well. I had already been frustrated to tears by a class just before the meeting and ended up in a full blown panic attack when the parent was allowed to berate me for 15 mins and question why I’m teaching. My Vice Principal did NOTHING. I went home ready to quit only to find out I’d be liable for paying $3k to the district and could lose my certification. I also then heard my Principal tell another teacher that I’m just whining and stirring up shit…I hate my school.

Sometimes I really have to remind myself that I do this for the kids, not their parents, not admin, and definitely not the pay.

Admin chewed me out today for asking her to stop scheduling meetings with my students during class time (6 kids missed class today alone)!

So it’s the day before break, and all though the school. All the students are crazy, and the teachers are too. The 8th graders come to theater and are given a choice of kahoot or a movie. When 2 8th graders loose the vote they start screaming at me to the point of the teacher across the hall and security guard come running and call the VP for 8th grade and writing them both up… Still have 4 more classes… pray for me

Our school has appointed a new academic counselor, and she is changing every little thing in the school, which has increased the workload of us teachers. I feel so exhausted since then that it is making me frustrated on every little thing. I feel bad on shouting my students but i can’t help it. The workload and the level to which the students are testing my patience is going up, up and up.

For the first time in almost a decade, my district got raises last year. This year our insurance went up and ate up that increase (and then some). I don’t know how much longer I can take pay cuts. I don’t even know if I like my job anymore. I don’t feel appreciated.

My admin chewed me out because a kid I sent down who was in trouble for trying to start multiple problems all hour in my room claimed I said shut up to the class. Now I’m in trouble and the kid got off scot free despite being in trouble multiple times with all their teachers.
