Since I turned in my letter of intent a few weeks ago, my principal has been ignoring me or blaming me for things that aren’t my fault out of spite. I can’t wait to get out of this school, but at the same time, I pity the teacher who takes my place.

I have been teaching for about 4 years in an environment where stress was a given. This year I am in a new environment and it has been such a blessing. The terrible part is the lack of professionalism and a ton of favoritism. It creates poor morale for everyone who is trying to do the right thing. Those that do not do the right thing have that favoritism. It makes me want to leave but besides all that drama, I love my work.

I’m trying to leave the education field, but I wanted to share the most important thing I’ve done in the few years I worked as a teacher. One of my kids was having panic attacks in the bathroom every day because he was so terrified of school, social interaction, and failure. I took a risk and opened up to him and let him know that I struggle with anxiety and that I see a therapist for it, and that it’s totally okay to feel what he’s feeling. He was surprised to know that adults have these problems too, and I think relieved to know that he wasn’t the only one struggling. I recommended my counseling office to his mom, and they’ve had a few sessions there. Already, this kid’s personality is shining through where it wasn’t before. He is feeling so much better. He is so sweet and makes the people around him laugh. And it makes me feel good that I helped this happen. Education may not be for me, but never let it be said that I didn’t make a huge difference in a child’s life. Because of this, my 4 years in education weren’t wasted.

Yesterday a student wanted to fight me, her teacher, because I wouldn’t give her phone back to her as part of school policy. In my four years of teaching I have NEVER encountered such aggressive behavior. I don’t know how I did it, but I walked away and headed towards the VP, which was luckily in the hallway; I didn’t know what I would have done if she really did hit me. Also, can we talk about why teachers should have to deal with student violence as part of their profession?! It breaks my heart that though tiny this incident is, some teachers have it WORSE. This is totally unacceptable and yet we as teachers put up with it. This is ridiculous.

In my small reading group we were reading about a character whose name was George. Later in the story the character is called by his full name, “George Red.”
One of my students looked at my quizzically and asked, “Is his last name really red? Who would have a last name that is a color? That is weird!” I replied to my student, “Really? Really? You think having a ‘color’ for a last name is weird? Really? Jameer Brown? You think having a color for a last name is weird?” It took Jameer a few minutes. He finally figured out that his last name was a color too. Oh boy…!

I think this school has made me so disillusioned with the profession. This is my fourth year. I am resigning this year, and I’m actually going to find a new career. It breaks my soul that I put everything into this job, risking my own health and sanity for this school and these at-risk kids—and my VP still fails my observations and finds holes in everything. Four months to go, and then I’m gone. I wish there were a spell or some sort of magical concoction that can make me stop crying.

Today, I think I crossed the threshold of pursing other career options outside of education. I have no idea what I will do, but something has to be better than this…I cannot do it anymore. I am overworked and undervalued.

A sub left a note about yesterday’s class saying “I hope you don’t endure this punishment and pain on a daily routine with no help from administration. God help the public education system.”

This year I’ve gotten threatened by students, personal items broken and cursed at directly in my face but admin does nothing to help. What has teaching become…

Signed,
A defeated and exhausted high school science teacher

I have been scratched by one of my students two days in a row and he’s drawn blood twice. I teach high school special education and while I love my students, I’m already bleeding in my first year of teaching.
