I was teaching in the kindergarten many, many years ago and I got to meet one of my most unforgettable student. I introduced my name and I asked him what’s his. He replied, “ My name is Christopher Kennedy.” In my wanting to start up a conversation, I asked and said, Oh you’re a Kennedy, Do you know JFK? The child readily replied, “Of course I know Teacher, here… JFK. And the poor child was pointing to each of the three letters on the wall, JF and K…

I was teaching Pre-k and the kids were getting up from nap and putting their shoes back. I looked over and saw a little boy putting his shoes on the wrong feet, so I said “Honey you are putting your shoes on the wrong feet”. He looked at me with sleepy, sad eyes and replied “These are the only feet I have”! We laughed about that comment all year!

After 12 years of teaching, I’ve come home the last few nights with something repeating. I’m miserable and I hate this job.

Back to work today, and I forgot how cold my classroom is. Time to bust out the long sleeves again!

As a teacher with anxiety, keeping up with the news makes me terrified that I’ll be shot to death at work one day.

I recently moved to another country for an adventure I was really excited about, which meant I had to leave my form group behind. They were the first group that was really ‘mine’ and I bonded with them strongly. I knew saying our goodbyes would be difficult, but I didn’t expect to be missing them so much – it’s almost heartbreaking.

I had a student with behavior issues who was usually out once a week due to asthma. This boy really thought he was dumb and whenever he was in trouble would say ” go ahead, tell my mom, she’s not going to do anything to me anyway”. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas he was present everyday and two days before Christmas break began answering questions during Science. When I told him he was right he opened his mouth and did a double take and said “I was right?”. Then another little boy said “He got the answer right!” Louder and louder and kept looking at him with his mouth open the rest of the lesson.

Had a very difficult year dealing with a new principal who doesn’t quite understand what comes with a very low income neighborhood. I sincerely thought my job was at stake and as a second year teacher didn’t know how to defend myself. Especially when the principal is the person stopping me mid conversation and asking me whether I’m really sure I want to be a teacher. I had several conferences with her thoughout the year, during class time, after which I would quickly try to stop the tears coming and clean myself up before heading back to my students for the rest of the day. I was blamed for my students’ behavior, accused of failing my students, and questioned on what I taught most of the year. But I learned how the principal works and ultimately, sadly, earned my spot on her “good” side for now. As the year went by I learned that unfortunately I was not the only one this was happeing to and realized that any and all progress I made with my students was the only confirmation I needed for how good of a teacher I am. And the best thing I found out was I have a couple of great teacher friends who listened to me, prayed for me, and pushed me through.

I was an assistant teacher for a kindergarten classroom. I was sick for a few days, the stomach flu, just got back. I was sitting with some girls in the morning coloring before class started. One asked me to draw them a panda and they’d color it in. I drew it and she said “thanks, but that doesn’t look right.” I laughed cause, oh well, I tried my best. Another girl says, “Be nice to her, she just got here.” First girl, “No she’s been here all morning!” “Yeah but she’s been sick!” Hilarious, best moment I had working there.

When asking my TKers what they liked to do with their mom one girl told me she “used to jump on the trampoline with my mom”. When I asked her why she didn’t any more she told me it was because her “mom got boobs put on top of her boobs and she couldn’t anymore”.
