In a heated moment of Vocal Jazz dress rehearsal with my advanced HS women’s choir the other day I said: “I will kick you out if you laugh when you make a mistake.” Considering how unlike me that phrase was, no one dared to put it to the test. And then they rocked their performance today!

Yesterday a mother signed into the office, then came to my classroom. I wasn’t expecting her. She entered and very aggressively screams at me and accused me of calling CPS on her. I thought she was going to knock me out right in from of my class. I cried. A. Lot.

Student- “You know, I thought you were really weird in the beginning. Now you are my favorite teacher.”

Perfect ending to my Friday ☺️

I was substituting in grade 8 and every Friday afternoon we’d do arts and crafts. I love art so this was right up my alley. At the end of the school year I received a letter from each student as a parting gift and one of them said “You have made me enjoy drawing.” Success!

We have active shooter trainings, and they tell us that we’re the last line of defense and that we’re expected to put ourselves between the shooter and our students and take a bullet for our students if necessary. I have some middle school students who are so hateful and so disrespectful, who make doing my job so miserable and impossible, that I find myself thinking there is no way I could take a bullet for them. Not that I would wish them harm, but that I wouldn’t take myself away from my own children intentionally. And that makes me wonder if I should change professions.

A kid told me that I was in such an annoyingly good mood that it put her in a good mood. She is notoriously grumpy so I consider this a success!

I got an student to repeat the word “echolalia” nonstop for 45 minutes. The girl herself thought it was the funniest joke in the world. I’m not even a little bit sorry.

I am a pre-service teacher. I have a student who has behavioral issues. Instead of constant repremimand, I have tried to understand. The other day, we had a pep talk. He told me he knew I believed in him and that he just needed to believe in himself. He had three referrals that week and if he got another one, he wouldn’t go on the field trip. On Friday, guess who was all ready to go on the field trip? The moment was priceless.

I can’t wait until June. This is such a hard group. Of my 24 students 8 are on IEPs, I only have 8 girls, and I have 3 of the hardest students behaviorally in the entire school. I have another student’s parent breathing down my neck since the kid isn’t getting good grades. My main goal each day is to just keep all the students safe from the three. Teaching this group is secondary. It’s honestly not worth it this year. If I knew where I could get paid the same or better I would leave Monday.

I am a white woman working at a school with only 6% white students. The other day, I heard a student say “f-ing hoale” which is a derogatory term for whites/foreigners in Hawaii. I looked at the student and he said “not you Miss. I just said yesterday that I wish more white people were like you.” I wasn’t sure if it was a great compliment but it sure made me feel good. Hope to build more bridges between races than burn them.
