Weekends For Teachers: Goals vs. Reality

Weekend Goals Vs reality Teachers

Congratulations you’ve made it to Friday! It’s time to dive head first into another much-deserved weekend. Us teachers need all the breaks and days off we can get, but what do we actually do with them?

1. Catch Up On Your Grading

Goals: Load our arms with everything that needs to be graded. Then after a very long and restful night of sleep, you methodically work through each and every piece of work in your pile. Carefully make sure that every student’s assignment gets the care and consideration it deserves, and record it in your grade book which is now perfectly up to date and organized.

Reality: Bring home whatever you can grab as you run out the door Friday and throw it in a heap on your coffee table. Pass by it occasionally over the course of the next two days and say a silent prayer that perhaps a magical grading elf will appear and do it for you.

P.S. The elf never appears.

2. Going To The Gym

Goals: You realize that going to the gym would increase your energy levels throughout the week, making you a far more productive teacher. So you plan on starting each day of your weekend with cardio and some weight training, giving you a sense of wellness and accomplishment.

Reality: You lay in bed for an hour trying to convince your body to get up and be active. Then you realize that running around all day wrangling kids and walking all over the school 5 days a week is kind of like a workout all its own, so you congratulate yourself for working out 5 times this week, and try to take a nap instead.

3. Meeting Up With Friends

Goals: Spend your entire week making plans with your friends to go out. Pick the restaurant to meet at and the bars you want to hit afterwards. Aw heck, you might even download the menu and start salivating over which meal you’ll order while you laugh the night away.

Reality: Go home and hop in the shower to get ready for your big night out. Climb out of the shower, wrap yourself in a towel and lay down on the bed “just for a minute or two”. Wake up 6 hours later to 8 missed calls and 25 text messages wondering where you are.

4. Catching Up On Sleep

Goals: Forget all about that alarm clock and peacefully snooze away until well after the sun has come up. You awake refreshed after a solid 10 hours of sleep, as both your mind and body are completely recovered.

Reality: You forget that despite not setting your actual alarm clock, you have an internal alarm clock that is geared to get up at the crack of dawn. So instead of sleeping in you awake in a panic that you’re late to school, only to realize 5 seconds later there is no school today.

5. Taking Time to Relax & Recharge

Goals: Take a long relaxing bath while listening to soothing music, then slip into your most comfortable pair of pajama pants and your softest t-shirt. Open a bottle of wine, light some candles, and fire up your DVR. Grab some comfort food, a couch, and a blanket and slowly unwind and become at peace as the weekend progresses.

Reality: You realize you can’t relax until you cook dinner, do the laundry, sweep the floors, clean up around the house, mow the lawn, pay the bills, and run any other errands you may have. Usually, this means there’s about 10 minutes left on Sunday evening, which you spend freaking out about having to go back to work on Monday.

6. Doing Laundry

Goals: Since you realize doing laundry is the bane of your existence you decide to get it out of the way early Saturday morning. You load the washer first thing in the morning, carefully putting your whites in a separate pile. By the end of the day, every piece of dirty clothing has been washed, dried, folded and put away.

Reality: You start throw a load in the wash, and then forget about it for the rest of the day, and now it smells funny. By the end of the weekend you now have a pile of folded clothes that need to be put away, a load in the dryer that needs to be folded, and you still have a load in the wash that smells funny.

7. Lesson Planning

Goals: You load up all your teacher editions and take home your laptop so you can get a head start on your lesson plans. You artfully craft creative and engaging lessons so that every student is absorbing and understanding the lesson. You align your teaching to state standards, while coming up with fresh and innovative ways to get your point across.

Reality: You left your teacher editions at school. You can barely remember what you just finished teaching this week, so you decide to wake up extra early Monday morning, get to school ahead of schedule and frantically throw something together that could possibly convince someone that you actually have a plan for the next few days.

8. Meal Prep

Goals: You know that every morning you’re in a rush, so you decide to plan out your lunches for the week to save you some time. You spend hours online getting wonderful ideas, and by Sunday evening you have all your meals and snacks laid out for the week.

Reality: You don’t come close to even thinking about planning for the week ahead so you wonder if buying a large pizza and eating a slice a day for 5 days counts as “meal prep”.
