The Brutal Reality of Taking a Sick Day Off As a Teacher

Ron Swanson wearing big winter jacket sitting behind computer, looking sick. Sick Day Off as a Teacher

Being sick as an educator is never fun. Not only because we’re not feeling well, but because the seemingly convoluted task of actually taking a sick day off can be ridiculously overwhelming. Every day we enclose ourselves in a room with 30 or more bacteria-infested creatures that can’t stop touching each other, so it’s no wonder we catch the newest viral illness going around.

The following scenarios are a perfect depiction of what it’s like for teachers to take a day off, and there isn’t enough Lysol on the planet that can help us avoid the burden of calling in sick.

1. Getting on the phone to find a substitute willing to come in…

2. Creating the sub plans to include the perfect amount of work to keep the kids busy the entire day…

3. Returning to your room and reading the note the sub left about your class’ behavior…

4. Dealing with disciplinary issues from the kids who misbehaved while you were gone…

5. Opening your computer and trying to respond to the countless emails you received…

6. Seeing all of the papers from the day’s assignment on the desk that you now have to grade

7. When you come back, everyone you see says something like: “look who decided to show up today!” …

8. Realizing it would have been easier to have just gone to school and stuck it out…
