Celebs Praise Teachers After One Day of Homeschooling Their Kids

Parents all across the world are getting a little taste of what teachers deal with as most families have suddenly been asked to homeschool due to the COVID-19 quarantine. What’s that? Your kids don’t want to sit quietly and focus on learning? Interesting.

Celebrities aren’t immune from the struggle. Shonda Rhimes praised teachers in a Twitter post that quickly went viral. Rhimes is a Hollywood powerhouse – a TV producer, film and television and best selling author. She has brought us Grey’s AnatomyPrivate Practice and Scandal. She is a smart, talented and determined woman. And she still got totally frazzled on day one of trying to teach her children at home.

Rhimes tweeted, “Been homeschooling a 6-year old and 8-year old for one hour and 11 minutes.  Teachers deserve to make a billion dollars a year.  Or a week.”

Teachers aren’t greedy. We’ll gladly take the billion a year, Shonda. No need to pay us a billion weely.

Kristen Bell is a huge supporter of teachers. She and her followers have sent truckloads of classroom supplies to teachers across the United States. She’s always very open about her life and is extremely candid on her Instagram stories. She’s discussed her mental health struggles, marriage therapy, having worms, parenting mishaps and finding dog poop behind her washing machine. So it’s no surprise she gave her followers a glimpse into the first day of homeschool for her family on her Instagram story.

Bell has two daughters with her husband, actor Dax Shephard. Lincoln will be 7 this month and Delta is 5.

“So we’re doing some at-home school work here. My older daughter is doing great with it. My little daughter…not so much.”

She showed a homemade math worksheet with Lincoln’s name at the top containing ten multiplication, addition and subtraction problems.

Then she showed another worksheet with Delta’s name at the top. It had eight basic addition and subtraction questions. Delta answered the first question, 1+2, correctly. Then she answered 2+3 incorrectly and decided that’s all she was going to do. She wrote “NO” in big letters next to every problem instead of attempting to answer them.

Kristen chimed in with, “That’s going to be a hard pass for her on this math work.”

As Kristen demonstrated, balancing different personalities is a challenge when trying to teach kids at home. Multiply the struggle a few times to understand what teachers are working with! Most teachers have several Lincolns, who are compliant and try their best, as well as several Deltas, spirited kiddos who keep us all on our toes.

Kristen also shared a coloring project they did. She’s been using her platform to urge people to stay home during the COVID-19 crisis and to practice social distancing. She and her girls created a sign that says, “We are going to flatten the curve.”

Kristen’s longtime best friend and Veronica Mars co-star Ryan Hansen also shared footage on his Instagram story of his family’s first day at home together with school closed. He referred to it as “Hansen homeschool.” He shared a video of his three daughters sitting around the kitchen table doing school work. The oldest was working on a laptop and the younger ones had pencils and paper. He also shared a video of the girls practicing their balance outside and a family Bootcamp workout in the living room.

Good job alternating brain work with movement, Hansen family! Teachers can certainly relate to thinking up activities that keep kids’ attention and also help burn some excess energy. Parents who are trying to juggle teaching kids of different ages and with different personalities are getting a taste for what teachers go through daily. We have dozens of kids of different learning styles, developmental levels and personalities in our classrooms. We have to figure out how to teach, encourage, support and challenge each of them.

The COVID-19 quarantine is going to be a challenge for all of us – celebrity families included. However, hopefully, good will also come out of it. Parents will have time to get to know their children, be truly involved in the learning process with them and see what it’s like to be a teacher. Celebrities sharing the journey like Rhimes, Bell, and Hansen did on day one helps teachers feel validated and parents feel less alone.
