16 Times Gilmore Girls Captured the Emotions of 2020 Teaching

Teaching in 2020 is an emotional rollercoaster. It’s a whole new game that not even the most experienced teachers have ever experienced. And the rules are constantly changing. Teachers’ emotions are all over the place every single day – happy, anxious, overwhelmed, frustrated, proud, and more all within the same class period! And no one gets these feelings better than Gilmore Girls. Here’s a round-up of just some of the complicated emotions of pandemic teaching with the help of Lorelai, Rory, Luke, Emily, Richard, and Sookie.

1. When we have no idea what to expect because each day brings new challenges in pandemic teaching

2 . When we’re skeptical about the plan, but caffeinate and dive in anyway

3. When someone on social media says teachers are working less now that they’re remote

4. When our students turn in assignments that are not empty files on Google Classroom

5. When a student says something inappropriate but funny and you can’t hold back the laughter

6. Trying to explain to someone why pandemic teaching can’t be evaluated through test scores

7. When my partner finds my receipt from the Target Dollar Spot

8. When you get an email alert from the district

9. When your students see that you’re on the verge of a meltdown

10. When a student tells you that you’re their favorite teacher

11. When you and your teacher bestie get a chance to vent to each other about this school year

12. When everyone turns their cameras on without nagging

13. When technology is just not cooperating

14. When you remember you signed up to take a certification exam over winter break and now you’re questioning your sanity

15. When you receive emails from the district, admin, parents, and students at all hours of the day and night

16. When we love being a teacher no matter how exhausting and stressful it can be

Thank you, Gilmore Girls, for so perfectly helping us identify and process our emotions. Teaching in 2020 brings feelings we didn’t even know existed.
