The music scene in the 90’s was wild, colorful, ever-changing, and super varied. Kinda sounds like an average day in the life of a teacher. So what better time period to illustrate our lives than those fast-moving 90’s?

1. When you walk anywhere near a student bathroom or locker room

Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana

For some reason kids (especially the boys) go between being really stinky, or dousing themselves with entire bottles of perfume. There is no middle ground, and either way it’s all about teen spirit.

2. When you walk into your classroom and the students are having an “off day”

Gansta’s Paradise- Coolio

You can hear them from down the hall, you know it’s going to be an insanely hard day. So what do you do? You pull your hair back, straighten your outfit, and be ready for anything.

3. When you bring hot coffee with you, but forget it exists until it’s cold

Ice Ice Baby- Vanilla Ice

Hey isn’t this how iced coffee got invented in the first place? Maybe Vanilla Ice was on to something all those years ago.

4. When you ask your class a question and get a truly bizarre response

Unbelievable- EMF

Some answers may be right, some may be wrong, and some may be a little off base. Occasionally, though, you get an answer that’s so far off the wall it truly is… unbelievable.

5. For all the times you go above and beyond for your class

Everything I Do (I Do It For You)- Bryan Adams

Teachers take time out of their day to plan exciting and fun lessons for their class. Sometimes we buy extra supplies or treats if they’ve deserved it. You know it’s true…. everything we do… we do it for them.

6. When the last kid leaves on Friday

Livin’ La Vida Loca- Ricky Martin

School weeks can be really long, and making it to the end of one is an accomplishment in and of itself. So it’s no surprise that teachers feel pretty good on a Friday afternoon.

7. When you look at your paycheck, and it’s not enough to cover expenses

Bills, Bills, Bills- Destiny’s Child

Yeah, yeah, yeah we didn’t get into teaching for the money. But wouldn’t it be nice if we could least pay our telephone bills or our automo-bills.

8. When you just can’t get your kids to be quiet

Don’t Speak- No Doubt

We can teach, train, cajole and incentivize the students to get them to quiet down, but sometimes the only thing you can do is look them straight in the eye and tell them… don’t speak.

9. When kids come up to your desk and start messing with stuff

U Can’t Touch This- MC Hammer

Kids are naturally curious, and many of them have never been taught to look with their eyes not with their hands.

10. When students repeatedly ask to repeat the instructions

I Want It That Way- Backstreet Boys

It never fails to amaze how you can tell students exactly how you want something done over and over again, and yet they still feel the need to ask every single time.

11. When students ask what the homework is for tonight… for the 20th time

You Oughta Know- Alanis Morissette

You mention it, you write it on the board, you mention it again, it’s still on the board. Then as everyone is leaving for the day, a flurry of hands go up and they all have the same burning question… what’s the homework for tonight again?

12. When you make it to the end of the year

Summertime- DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince

Before he was “Will Smith, movie star”, he was the Fresh Prince dropping funky fresh beats about all that is good about the Summer. Teachers don’t necessarily need to be reminded, but it sure feels good to crank this tune as they’re getting on the bus for the last time.
