Don’t get me wrong, I love me some free Tex-Mex at Chipotle and discounted pancakes at IHOP, but I think many would agree that we could use a lot of other things, a lot more (and yes, we know the Mexican food chain is not responsible for raising our salaries or buying us school supplies, so don’t go getting all stuck on that!). Teachers and supporting friends have taken to Twitter to voice what they’d prefer, what they need more. Here’s what they have to say…
1.
No professionals are more important and more underpaid.
And God knows we need them more than ever today. #TeacherAppreciationDay

For #TeacherAppreciationDay, I don’t want free Chipotle / Potbelly’s; I want fully-funded #publicschools where #teachers don’t have to buy materials or go on #strike to get new books, sustaining (not slashing) #CHIP, and politicians to stop playing roulette with my #pension

Wishing a very happy #TeacherAppreciationDay to all my colleagues but especially those in WV, OK, AZ, KY & everywhere teachers are standing up to protect the right to a free, quality education for ALL students, and, by so doing, protecting democracy itself

“Hey, you get free burritos and ice cream this week!”
Teachers: “How about an increase in salary?”
“You don’t want your free burritos?”— ʜᴏᴜꜱᴛᴏɴ ᴍᴇᴍᴇʟʟᴜᴍɪɴᴀᴛɪ (@SwampPosting) May 8, 2018

We need to be paying teachers a comfortable, living wage. No teacher should ever have to work two jobs to survive or worry about their students having the supplies they need to succeed. Teachers shape the character, caliber, and future of our children #TeacherAppreciationDay

Thanks to all teachers who give so much to their students throughout the year and get far too little respect from their Gov. and some legislators. I’ll proudly be standing side by side with you as we fight to regain lost ground!! ? ? #TeacherAppreciationDay pic.twitter.com/wMWqExbDPY

Free burritos & books are nice, but better pay, increased funding for resources & staffing, improved & maintained benefits packages, & equitable investment & opportunity for all students is how to show appreciation for teachers & public schools. #TeacherAppreciationDay #schoolUS

My mother was driven from teaching into early retirement by bureaucracy & incessant standardised test prep. The daily battle w/ parents, admin, and the system was affecting her health.
She touched a lot of hearts & minds before she left.#TuesdayThoughts#TeacherAppreciationDay

The best part of #TeacherAppreciationDay is seeing that all of the politicians know there are teachers and they need pats on the back every now and then. How about remembering the teachers when you are pushing through bad bills that harm not only the teachers, but the students.

Thank you to teachers who work overtime for free, buy grocery gift cards for starving families, listen to stories of childhood trauma every day, convince kids that they are born worthy, and give of their boundless love. #TeacherAppreciationDay

Every teacher has an impact on every student they teach. Why shouldn’t these mentors who are the planters of the seeds of the future not be paid like our future depends upon them?#TeacherAppreciationDay

A few things public teachers would appreciate: fully funded public education, technology rich classrooms, improved salaries, freedom to teach. #TeacherAppreciationDay

#TeacherAppreciationDay should be every day. Educators play such a huge role in the development in our lives and unfortunately, they do not always receive the recognition they deserve. My mom does so much more than most people believe. It’s not 8-3 every day and 3 months off.

#TeacherAppreciationDay how about we help our teachers not have to work multiple jobs to be able to survive.

I’ve had a blessed career and my passion for science and learning was nurtured by teachers and professors at all levels. Let’s pay them well, give them resources needed, and not expect them to be SWAT team in schools …Thanking educators on #TeacherAppreciationDay

Teachers are the unsung heroes. They trained the President, Governors, Lawyers, Engineers, Scientists, Doctors and the Future leaders. These guys deserve not only accolades, they deserve a good pay and they deserve to have their salaries paid promptly. #TeacherAppreciationDay

It’s #TeacherAppreciationDay. I had good ones and my wife is one (they grade them up to 100, Jill is a 97, which I think means she’s an 80?). Thanks to these folks who deserve more recognition than our society gives them.
